Fatal Flaw? Leopard 2 Shot Trap?
Is the wedge armor on the turret front of Leopard 2A5, 2A6, etc. a shot trap? Is this a weakness? What it is for? For this I talked to a former Leopard 2A6 gunner in the German Panzermuseum.

Explosive Reactive Armor: Common Misconceptions (feat. Prof. Paul Hazell)
Просмотров 68 тыс.21 день назад
In this video we look at common misconceptions about explosive reactive armor (ERA), namely that it does not explode as easily as the name suggests, that it is also used by Western countries, that the ERA panel explosion is actually far more dangerous for bystanders than a HEAT round exploding with practical insights from Prof. Paul Hazell (UNSW Canberra), that modern ERA also works against kin...

The only advantage a halftrack has is if a track breaks on a hill they can maintain some braking and directional control. Otherwise they have all the complications of a tracked vehicle and a wheeled vehicle. Maximum limiting speed of the track portion is the same for track only and track-wheel hybrids. For the tracks to be usefull they need to carry most of the vehicle weight, but that reduces weight on the front tires and limits the steering effectiveness. The differential steering on a track-only vehicle is not a difficult skill to learn. Unless they are recruiting from a mental institution any operator will be proficient with an hour of practice.
in Greece we remember these hand-picked German fighters as war criminals for the brutality and vindictiveness they committed against the citizens because men, women, children and even priests resisted with what they had (knives, hunting weapons and even stones) defending their country. The best example of the bravery of the German paratroopers is the massacre in Kontomari where, after killing all 180 residents and burning all the houses of the village, they also slaughtered the animals. The next day they razed Kadanos in the same way, killing all the inhabitants. There they also raised a sign that said "Kandanos was destroyed in retaliation for the bestial ambush murder of a paratrooper platoon and a half-platoon of military engineers by armed men and women." It was overestimated for sure because people don't commit such crimes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Kondomari en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razing_of_Kandanos
NATO doctrine is designed to maximize profits of US defense contractors
Imagine making a video about why NATO tactics fail for a country that _DOESN'T USE NATO TACTICS._ The lack of air dominance makes this perfectly obvious on its own that Ukraine doesn't have the option to use the NATO approach to warfare. Which is why Ukraine has been using Soviet tactics instead. Minus the human waves and suicide charges. Rather, what we see in Ukraine is Soviet tactics failing miserably against a nation that is using Soviet tactics with common sense.
I find it hard to believe that russia hasn't mastered the intricacies of palletezation by now. Yeah older ammo is in crates, but today? Come on.
Stupid..... they're outmaned and outgunned...simple as that...
I'm just going to jump in here real quick with an assumption that the question posed in the title is what the video is about. If so, it's Air Power. NATO is first and foremost an air force, like 60%, then 25% navy. NATO doctrine isn't failing because you need an air force to execute NATO doctrine.
dude i played this game scince day 1 and the russians are just better. Cheaper Stuff and the high end shit like UD etc. If you play the russians right you are unstoppable.
it is a shot trap for the drones in Ukraine as it will aim the shot right into a weak spot. tank on tank it does not work as a shot trap until the Russian start using the T34/85 again as they brought a bunch from Laos last year as well as t-55 and they are solid shot
My grandfather captured a halftrack at the end of the fighting in Italy, and its believed he planned to try and bring it home to New Zealand to use on the farm, don't know what his plan was, but unfortunately just an hour after the German surrender in Italy he was killed by partisans who mistook him for one of Titos communist partisans... he was a bit of a rebel, wasn't wearing his full uniforms, jumped out of the vehicle wearing an American bomber jacket and a bandana, and holding a Luger and his Thompson... would have been a hell of a souvenir...
And Korea?
My opinion, there are a few main issues. 1. The counter-offensive was announced long before it happened. The Russians turned the vital lines into the most fortified lines on the planet aside from perhaps the Korean DMZ... miles of mines, prepared kill zones, prepared fallbacks. 2. Major power war has become generally more predictable to a certain extent. Predictability favors Russia due to its other current advantages. 3. The Ukrainian formations are not well coordiated, they are halfway between NATO and Soviet doctrine. And halfway between NATO and Soviet equipment. 4. War is industrial to a large extent. Russia is both out-producing and directly in control of its industry. Whereas Ukraine receives less and has to get its stocks externally. 5. The NATO trained formations for the counter-offensive had insufficient training and coordination drills to handle the kind of fighting they are doing... 6. Russia has escalation capabilities that are superior to NATO against an uncommitted NATO in offensive posture (entering a non-NATO Ukraine.) NATO doctrine generally expects at least parity and sometimes superiority in a defensive situation (it is supposed to be a defensive alliance.) This difference is heightened because Russia is fighting from a much less extended position.
NATO tactics only work when there's aerial superiority, why do you think the americans invest so much in the air force? it's the reason why they're able to bitchslap the iraqi military in 1 and a half month so unless the ukrainians figured out how to strap a meteor missile (tactically acquired *wink) onto their brand new F-16 (or a couple SU-27/MiG-29 they still had lying around) i'd doubt they'll achieve aerial superiority soon
Short answer. Russia never faced actual NATO tactics in Ukraine. They only faced some weapons owned by NATO countries used in extremely disjointed way.
Nah bro you are wrong, they trained specific units to nato standard with nato equipment. They got owned. What did you expect, nato commandos who never seen war of this scale training someone 😂 It should be Ukrainians training nato soldiers not other way around.
@@Veles1113 Yes, the basic training. NATO is a system and by lack of aviation itself, it should be obvious that it was not a NATO tactic. Because one of most basic NATO tactic is to not even attempt confrontation without air-supremacy. Systems what could be used individually like HIMARS, were extremely effective. Also you are aware that NATO countries participated in war in Iraq and Afganistan (and no US did not lost there, they just left). NATO has combat experience. Russia has only experience of loosing dozen aircraft's in few day war in Georgia and overrating Chechens. But yes. On ground infantryman level, Ukrainians have a lot of experience there.
@@TheRezro Yes im aware about Iraq and other wars. But before going to war, nato sanctioned and crippled those countries then isolated them and fought with overwhelming advantage. So it was basically like fighting crippled guys. Ukraine war is front on 700km where thousands die. NATO countries depilated ammunition etc. Those systems you mentioned need to be used in different way and need to be improved for large scale war. The ones fighting are Ukrainians not NATO, nato is just giving weapons. Meaning Ukraine has more experience in large scale conflict than any NATO country. Also do not forget the US was fighting mainly most NATO small scale wars, others are even more clueless than US. The Vietnam generation died out and that was the last large scale war US fought. NATO tactics are shit for this scenario, this war is against military superpower which can sustain itself unlike the EU. That is reality but our leaders and population seem arrogant thinking how we know it all without actual experience. Also there is a lot of propaganda, so i dont know really aboit system you mentioned effectivness. All i know Russians crushed electric and milktary infrastructure systems so their rockets are good. Ukraine drones sank russian ships so their ship defenses are crap and that is all we can confirm.
@@TheRezro also about Afghanistan, US lost that war. Sure the US crushed their military but the end goal is not met. Taliban rule over there, same as Vietnam US in the end lost as it failed to fulfil its goals.
NATO doctrine doesn't work because Ukraine doesn't have the training nor elements necessary for it to work and they were never entirely reformed into a battle order that is fundamentally required for these tactics to work. Soviet tactics are seen being used regularly by Ukrainian forces. In short they dont work because ukraine is hardly even using them and when they do theyre likely either not entirely trained, not outfitted properly, or both.
long video about nothing !!!!!!!!!!!!! NO AIR SUPERIORITY finished
Russian tanks are far superior ❤
Willy Pete is perfect for smoke and fear. Air is important, also everything must work together. Call for fire with air and other assets with attack. Not piece meal . Air protection and jamming with assault.
7:55 "your feces" hahahahahahahah gotta love german english
What NATO tactics?, you need air supremacy for that
As described the shape charge acts like a plasma wielder/cutter.
The half track did not end with WW2. It continued to serve in different armies with through in 1980s. Hell the Israelis had a bunch of them in active and reserve service as late 2008 until they were finally withdrawn and scrapped. I'll grant they didn't fill every role and had some problems but they did their did job until better vehicles took their place.
my turkestan 😔
The superior fire power doesn't allow any maneuvering in Ukraine
Interesting discussion, My father was a half-track crewmember in the war. He was a sedgeant, so I guess he was vehicle commander(???). Third Armored Div. The Spear head passed less than 45 km from where I'm living, and lost ubits within 15 km of my location. I never met the man, long story, but I honor his service.
Western tanks have crumbled when exposed to a tiny fraction of the battle conditions Russian tanks are used to.
TL;DR: Nato tactics some specific assumptions which do not hold in Ukraine.
To put it simply, half tracks are difficult to manoeuver than both all tires or tracks. Add to that, half-tracks don't really take more heavy armor which was really the main disadvantage for armies to phase out the design altogether post WW2 as anti armor rounds advanced and armored vehicle armor level needed to increase as a result. This confusing design didn't go as good as full tracks on bad terrains and were chewing into paved roads and broke down easily. that's why we no longer use them anymore
BTW there is a halftrack version of the Hummer. The real thing only really helpful in the mud.
Thank you Bernhard and Tobias. Most enlightening.
The Leopard II and the M1A1/2 had a weakness, the hull roof is only 38 mm thick. A 125 mm HE explosion will blow up the roof
Underrated means better than what many people thought. It's better.
A buddy found an abandoned one near a forgotten WW2 bunker at the mouth of the Alsek River in Alaska. The seat fabric front and back was rotted out but the rest of the vehicle was remarkably intact and surprisingly very little rust. The rubber track was dry and cracked but it worked just fine after he got it running again.
WARNO is a game made in France.
Dzięki!
Das ist keine verdammte Schwachstelle. Wie oft kommt noch ein Video zu diesem Keil.
this has been covered countless times. Even if the APFSDS bounced, that's spaced armor, so it wouldn't bounce.
5:45 sorry folks, but the wedged armor is primarily against APFSDS. It's purpose is to destabilize the dart, so it hits the turret behind the wedge at an angle and shatters, as that is what these darts do when tumbling, as the expert pointed out so eloquently earlier in the video. The increased distance also has a negative effect on HEAT rounds, but that was gladly taken as a benefit of this kind of armor. Also, the space between wedge and turrent front is so big, that even longer NATO darts will start to tumble, which makes it effective not only against Russian APFSDS but also against NATO APFSDS, which in turn is the reason, why it became so popular in Arabic nations, next to the Abrams M1. Leopards wedged armor is precisely why it's considered to be the best armored turret front in the world. However, that doesn't mean it is the best armored tank in the world. Only the turret front is pretty strong, which makes it a fortress in a hull-down position. Correct me if I am wrong dear tankers, but plz add some sort of source if you do. :)
GEN. George Paton ; We Fought The Wrong Enemy 🇧🇪🫡 Lenny G. LBC. 🌊🏝️🛸🍀🍀🍀
Fully tracked and armored vehicles are not always the answer either. Consider the fact that many of the American G.I.s rode ON TOP OF their Fully tracked and armored personnel carriers during the Vietnam War because it was thought to be safer (from land mines which were considered to be the greatest threat) than riding inside.
Half tracks were used in Korea and Vietnam
Coz they didn't provide enough protection and morphed into APCs.
If the APDSFS rounds normalise why is the top half of the turret armour sloped at about 45 degrees? If "normalisation" actually works then surely a single verticalish slap like the later turret on the Konigstiger would be easier to manufacture, give more room it the turret, save money and time in production and be just as effective? PS bought the books.
NATO tactics is designed around air power and air superiority. Ukraine is doing practically the opposite of what NATO doctrine requires
Nobodies tactics work in Ukraine. NATO relies on firepower, which Ukraine was robbed of, and Russia...well their 3 day didn't work out well
